Tonight - West Side Story - Natalie Wood 's Own Voice
Here is Natalie's recording of "Tonight," which was used on-set during filming. Marni Nixon later replaced all of Natalie's voice. My original version of this had a ton of surface noise, since it came from Richard Beymer's badly damaged practice record. I extracted the vocals, did AI noise reduction, and then restored the orchestra from the stereo soundtrack.
This is actually a mix of Natalie and Marni. To clear up any confusion, I have added titles to identify who is singing what. Jim Bryant sings for Richard Beymer, as he did in the released film.
From Marni Nixon:
"The sessions were set up so that Natalie would first record a song on her own and then I would get up and record the whole song again...they explained my presence by saying that they would be able to mix my high notes into her takes, which I knew at the time was...technically impossible.
It was very disheartening to hear them as they listened to her playbacks and extolled her vocal prowess. 'Oh Natalie, that was just wonderful,' they cooed. They were creating a monster. A monster who thought everything she sang was perfect.
I am sure, however, that they thought if they were critical of her vocals in any way that she would walk off the picture before everything was filmed. She had them hostage and they were placating her until they didn't need her anymore.
I heard later that Natalie was very upset and felt betrayed by the powers that be. She sincerely wanted to sing her own tracks. I have to agree that it was cruel of Saul Chaplin and his musical crew to lead her on and make her believe there was a chance they would use her voice. But in their defense it was their job to make sure that their highly paid and very bankable star finished shooting every scene. In addition, it was their responsibility to present the brilliant and difficult Bernstein/Sondheim score in the best possible light. This they did, and did it well."

𝙊𝙠𝙖𝙮, 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 - 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝘾𝙊𝙊𝙇𝙀𝙎𝙏 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧! 15 years ago, Rosalind Russell's attempts to sing the score of "Gypsy (1962) were released. Only 1 1/2 of her songs were used in the film (for example, she was painfully sharp on every jump in "Some People"), and Lisa Kirk replaced everything else, including this song. But I just found some great software that can isolate vocal track...
Martha Mears - The Busiest Dubber in Hollywood
Переглядів 29 тис.4 роки тому
By far, the busiest dubber in history was Martha Mears, who dubbed over 50 actresses. Here are all the examples I could dig up of these hard-to-find films. In addition to being a great mimic (listen how her voice changes to match Colbert, Gabor, Lake, and Hayworth), Martha had an unaffected voice that could be used in many settings. I don't know why her career including only dubbing and radio. ...

Here is the complete version of this very difficult number (one of the rangiest Broadway songs ever) with Roz doing her own singing. Took a lot of balls to even attempt it! From her autobiography, "Life Is A Banquet": At first I was only to act the part; Rose's singing was dubbed by a professional with a big trained voice. When I heard it, I got sick. "It isn't me," I said. "I'm bad, but I can'...
Together Wherever We Go - Gypsy - Rosalind Russell, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden - Stereo

This deleted number from "Gypsy" was included on the DVD, but the sound was from a horrible 16mm print. I've replaced it with sound from the CD and edited into the existing film to give an idea of how it actually played. Unfortunately for Natalie, the key was lowered to accommodate Roz, forcing Natalie to sing (and yell) way above her range. From "The Unkindest Cuts" by Doug McClelland: Miss Ru...
Some People - Rosalind Russell 's own voice - Final Take - Gypsy 1962

Here is Roz' final attempt at singing this song, and the one she performed to while filming. This is not the take that was released on CD in 2005, and it's better than that one (though still not usable). This is actually made up of multiple takes edited together (not by me). She was completely dubbed in this number by Lisa Kirk in the released film. Roz includes exactly three paragraphs on "Gyp...

Here's Linda Blair's actual performance as recorded on set, followed by the same scenes dubbed by the great Mercedes McCambridge in the released film. From the Associated Press: McCambridge was hired to portray The Demon in William Friedkin's 1973 smash hit The Exorcist. After weeks of what she called the hardest work she had done for a film, she had been promised prominent mention in the credi...
The Sweetheart Tree - Mix of Natalie Wood and Jackie Ward - The Great Race
Переглядів 6 тис.4 роки тому
A dubbing experiment! Natalie sang most of this song quite well, with only a few shaky notes. Since she wanted to sing it so badly, and since Jackie Ward was such a good match, I felt they could have blended their voices as I have done here. Can you hear who is singing when? Scroll down to see the 11 words Jackie sings - but only after you first watch the clip! Also, I used the underscoring to ...
The Sweetheart Tree - Natalie Wood's own voice - The Great Race 1965

At first I thought this sounded too good to be Natalie, but once I matched it to the image I realized it is her. She sounds much better than in her earlier films! As in "West Side Story", it appears that Natalie filmed this scene to her own track - but her voice was later replaced by Jackie Ward.
Some People - Mix of Rosalind Russell and Lisa Kirk - Gypsy 1962
Переглядів 3,2 тис.4 роки тому
Roz was dubbed by Lisa Kirk in this number, and rightly so - she sharps certain notes very badly. But what if Lisa had just dubbed the bad notes? Here's my attempt to see if that was possible. This is rough, since I was not working from isolated vocal tracks, but it does give an idea of what could have been done if they had wanted to preserve more of Roz' voice.

The scratchy voice fits her character she’s been on the road running the show for years, her tired voice helps to understand her drive to fame
Her version is clearly the best version

Anyone else here from the Alien Romulus trailer?
these films were perfectly executed trash.
NOT TRASH!
@@trasegorsuch5140 yes, this is trash.
@@nkjkjnkj You’re just trying to piss people off. I know you don’t mean that?
@@trasegorsuch5140 no, i'm being honest
are you talking about alien?
She was not a professional singer but certainly carried a tune well.Gone too soon😰RIP +Natalie Wood🙏🙏🙏

Alien: Romulus, Movie Trailer brought me here...
I want to go into a time machine to 1967 when this movie came out so i can go to the theaters just to watch this over and over and over again
But you could never see this in a theater - only here.
Hi Lost Vocals, I am watching the movie The Houston Story(1956) and I think Barbara Hale's singing was dubbed in it. Do you know if it was and who sang for her?
Barbara did sing for herself here. She was dubbed in "Higher and Higher", though.
Who's here after watching the final trailer of Alien Romulus?
That was Earth-shatteringly beautiful. So much more emotional and touching than the dubbed version. What an extraordinary lady!😆
Whos here because of Alien
ROMULUS.
Here after the Alien: Romulus trailer
Gigi is so ahead of her time, that she should’ve been an American!
RIP Tony Mordente--Action in the movie 'West Side Story[.
Did some jilted lover leak this or what
Actually, a fan.
I may have made a comment a few years on this clip. But I think that Ms. Hepburn does a spectacular vocal job.
I was surprised you didn't include Joan Leslie. As with Jeanne Crain, Virginia Mayo, Vera-Ellen and Cyd Charisse, she did many musicals but was always dubbed.
There were scores of others I could have included - the video would be 4 hours long!
@@lostvocals8 Wow! It is incredible that there were so many of them. Most of them seem obviously dubbed when watching them on your clips. Do you know if Joan Leslie was even dubbed on the song Harrigan in Yankee Doodle Dandy? She claimed it was her singing on TCM. I don't think there was any instrumental accompaniement for her and Cagney on the song so maybe it was shot live without a prerecorded soundtrack.
@@donnafan7245 I think that was her, and might've been live on set!
Sexy & talented! Dubbing her voice out was another shameful "tinsel-town" decision.
Natalie also sang a song in Penelope(1966) and she did a beautiful job singing a song in The Affair(1973)
Her delivery is actually quite good, but no way would her cute voice would work in the final film.
All three are equally terrible! It was a good idea to edit this out of the film. Natalie may be loud, but Roz is really awful. Natalie sounded good on the rest of the soundtrack, though.
Tony Martin is a shocker! He was a very famous singer, with endless hit records.
The song had already been pre-recorded, so he had no choice.
@@lostvocals8 Thanks for the info.
El más puro significado de la expresión "muñeca" refiriéndose a una mujer. Una belleza casi irreal.
What I wouldn’t give for a dressing gown like that. Those need to come back!
Ava Gardner was so appreciated for her beauty that people didn’t give enough attention to the roles she chose that were not the usual ingénue actress roles. She was before her time and took risks that imho made her miles above a lot of other actresses. Her acting skills were likewise amazing.
I had no idea that wasn't Debbie's voice in this song in the movie. I can hear the difference now. Why didn't they use her voice? They should have.
Didn't seem mature enough for Lena.
Such love, such emotion in her voice, her so beautiful face, wonderful actress ❤️
I'm guessing they dubbed him because while he sounds fantastic, he doesn't really sound that sad. The mood is just wrong, and that did need addressing.
I think it was the "oohs" that killed it.
Amo os filme da Esther Williams rainha das Piscina bela Sereia grande nadadora ótima atriz 🌺💙💙💙💚💙❤️💜❤️💜❤️💙💚💙❤️💜🤍🤍🤍💜❤️💙💚🌺🌺🌺🎷🎸🎷🎸🎷🎸👑👑👑
The frail yet lovely voice beautifully fits Whoodhouse's lyric.
If you watch Julie Andrews perform Wouldn't it be Loverly, the acting is not even close. Hepburn is miles beyond in the acting department. Vocals can be fixed, but the acting can't.
The reverse is true. Julie had a long and distinguished career as an actor. That’s something you can learn, as many have. But if you can’t sing, you can’t sing. Both Audrey and Natalie Wood tried to sing for years - neither could do it at the level needed for a score like MFL.
I have always loved this movie, Great performances by Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis, the great Jack Lemmon, and of course Peter Falk and Keenan Wynn. All the five top leads were above and beyond great, and of course direction by Blake Edwards. A forgotten masterpiece
❤
❤
great emotional interpretation but there were a lot of unsustained notes and swallowed consonants. compare this with peggy lee's version or the version on the movie. it's not easy to get the diaphragm in action; it takes time and practice.
Of course, we've all heard Annette Warren's version. I, and many others here, prefer Ava's.
@@lostvocals8 ava's beauty has bewitched you. which is not a bad thing to be bewitched by. but coral snakes are beautiful, too.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
I love pattys raw voice. It’s unique
I just watched this earlier this evening. And in all honesty, Louis Jourdan is absolutely the most beautiful creature on the screen!
Henry mancini was a genius
I really like the music in this song.
How did dubbing Warner Oland on "The Jazz Singer" work? Did Joseph Diskay sing off screen? A quick response would be amazing, thank you!
I don't know for a fact, but since it was so early in sound recording, the likely answer is that Diskay was offscreen during filming. That certainly would be the simplest way to do it.
@@lostvocals8 Thanks! Would be great to find a source for that. In case you have one, please let me know!
Merci Nathalie Wood que t’as fait des films merveilleux tu étais si belle tu es parti si jeune j’ai tous tes films je ne t’oublierai jamais Céline
❤ she's a beautiful girl from North Carolina, a natural beauty 😍 😊
Spellingbinding!
Debbie's voice isn't terrible, it's just not very polished for this song. If it was transposed a bit higher, I think she could've had it. She's only weak in the lower part of her voice.
